Acting and Acting Style

The three actors that have chosen from my film is Marlon Brando(Vito Corleone), Al Pacino(Michael Corleone) and Robert Duvall(Tom the family trusted friend and lawyer). Brando and Pacino would be classified as personality actors, this is when an actor have a strong personality. They would be classified as method actors( when an actor use their own memories and experiences to reach their character) (Goodkoonz B. 2014).

The Godfather is a perfect film for Brando, the scene at his daughters wedding, when he was conduction business in his study; when he slaps his god son for not being strong. The slap brought life to his character. One of this best lines is ” I will make him an offer he cant refuse”(http://www.bing.com/images).

Robert Duvall would be considered an interpreter actor, this is an actor who tries to impersonate an actual person for a role. In the Godfather the scene when Tom(Duvall)was sent to the filmmaker, on the behalf of the Godfather. He was insulted by the filmmaker this made him angry because he was representing the godfather. Tom wanted respected, Copploa use this scene as a prop; to send a message anyone associated  with the godfather would be respected.

Al Pacino character is the same as Marlon Brando. The scene in the movie were he protect his father at the hospital and sitting around the table with his brother Sunny planning the murderer of the police lieutenant. This is a great example of a personality actor.

Without a doubt these powerful actors would be considered realistic opposed to stylized. Their performance from the beginning until the end of the film was realism(is when acting doesn’t draw attention to the actor, because a real person will have true emotions. The style actor wants  the attention to be placed on their characters.Al Pacino.jpg

Alfredo James Pacino is known as an actor and filmmaker.  Like the other two actors in the film. He is known for playing in gangster genre films. This award winning actor have been cast in 40 plus films. Pacino has been nominated for 8 Oscars ( won 1) , 4 BAFTA film Awards (won 1) 15 Golden Globe (won 4), 3 Emmy Awards (won 2) and 3 Tony Awards(won 2).

Based on the many films he have stared in Pacino would still be in the same category. The problems with stylized acting is best stated by Roger Ebert ” I have a problem with movies where everybody talks as if they were reading out of an old novel about a bunch of would-be colorful characters. They usually end up sounding silly”(Ebert,1987). The problem with stylized acting it often pull the audience away from the film storyline.

Al Pacino film Scarface, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Dick Tracy and Carlito’s Way just to name a few have, allowed this actor to not only pick the film he want to act in but also reach the audience; with overwhelming acting skills making these films realistic. This is a powerful method of acting because it leaves the audience wanting more. A true testimony of this great success with box office hits.

The Godfather

The dialogue in The God Father is voice over(when the characters voice narrates the action this type of dialogue helps the audience understand what’s happening in the film). In the Baptism scene Michael response to the Priest words while, the action of  “Fight Club” this form of sounds allow the audience inside of the characters thoughts, this will guild the audience into the next scene.

The sound of the explosion in “The Hart” are the scene effect is the sound of gunfire in The God Father. These sounds effect push the audience adrenaline, it help keep the audience recited waiting in pens and needles for the next scene. The sound of an organ highlight the gunfire scene. The music plays during the murder scene , the music plays loud to accent the gunfire but it plays softly during The Baptism scene. We can have our ears to hear the sound in the movie. One important  sound was the baby crying just before the killing start and after Michael  renounce Satan. With each scene he renounce evil but the evil deeds were done. The music stops when the dialogue of the Priest tells Michael to go in peace. “most composers would say if wrong” Bondelevitah said “and most people don’t think about what they’re hearing; were trained to notice what were seeing(Nilsen, 2008)”.

The impact of the sound put focus of the film, by each note of the organ something is going to happen. The overall mood of the scene would be like Alfred Hitchcock psycho (1960). The develop of the shower scene like the baptism. The sound keep you at the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next.

Hitchcock explained it best “Horrn is really an extreme of tears. Its as far as you can go”(Steven 2006,p 276). The murder scene accomplished this fear. Yet Michael renounce calm. The genre is gangster and the organ playing loud, then soft then at some points no music it lifted. The scene to the highest level of audience anticipation. The sound effect was realistic, because the main scene was shoot in the church; were the baptism takes place. Then scene would have the effect to keep the audience if you take out the organ. A harp or drums wouldn’t bring scene to a climax or reach the audience to anticipation, the next step in the scene.

Lighting of the God Father an epic of Gangster Film

The God Father is a gangster film, this is a subgenre of a crime film are “organized crime or maverick criminals in a twentieth-century setting” these films are based on crime families and the need for vengeance against their rival.

This weeks blog will express the important of lighting in the God Father, in order to understand light we must step into the director mind. What draws us to the people or objects in the film. How do the filmmaker express words without dialogue by using a French word called Mise en sce’ne  which means “place in the scene”(Inglorious,B 2009). The idea is it make every scene memorable as the audience would want to see what actor will perform next. The characters can be men or women and props are used to intensify the expectation of the movie. The position of the actions is called blocking. Sometimes actors use improvisation, to catch the spirit of the movie; this is accomplished by going off script.

In the movie The God Father the lighting is so important because it highlight the violence in the film. This genre of movies was to show the audience “these who live by the sword, shall perish by the sword”(Goodykoontz, B: 2014). This film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it’s an epic story told in the view-point of a crime family. The story is about Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) he is heartless and kills all his enemies while being godfather to his nephew, who later becomes a priest.

The lighting of the God Father is high-key, this is important so the audience will see that Michael wasn’t afraid. All his crimes were so everyone would fear him thus the high-key lighting.

The benefit style of this lighting is to keep the audience afraid, the same method of a horror film without the darkness. The lighting of this genre film is to show the conflict between right and wrong, how evil exist in bright lights like New York.

The scene at the baptisms was darkness in the church but the evil deeds were committed in the sunlight. If the lighting was different the brutal scene wouldn’t have the same impact.

TIME TO KILL

The film a Time to Kill is based on the love of father for his daughter in a small southern town. This town was fill with race with racism. The film start with a little African American girl walking to the store. She would find herself in a bad situation, where she believe her father would save her. Although she would cry for him, her father would never come to save her.

The father would take matters in his own hands to bring justice, to his daughter that was raped and left for dead. After killing the men that hurt his daughter, the father find himself on trail for murder. This trail would devide a town. Racial tension grow as the trail process.

The characters hold the attention of the audience, with each scene the plot thickens, and each character role begin to take shape. The effect on the audience wouldn’t be different, with a film like A TIME TO KILL, the there is only one out come, you will have to take a stand. Allow the courts to give you justice or become the hand of justice.
